The Ghan – Information & Tours

Named in tribute to the Afghan camel drivers who helped make Australia's Red Centre accessible at the end of the 19th century, the Afghan Express - affectionately called The Ghan - is the most luxurious way to discover the Land Down Under. The Ghan's maiden voyage from Adelaide to Alice Springs took place nearly 100 years ago, in August 1929, and since then, its route options and standard of excellence have left a lasting impression on travellers.

The entire 1,851-mile journey offers an in-depth look at Australia's unique regions, from the verdant vineyards and lush forests to the harsh Outback and tropical northern coast. Gold

Relax in a private retreat in The Ghan's Gold accommodations. These classic rooms feature everything travellers desire for a restful journey in the setup that best meets their needs. Guests can choose from Gold Twin cabins with a compact en-suite and upper and lower berths, Gold Single cabins with a lower-level single bed and in-room wash basin, Gold Access cabins thoughtfully designed for mobility-impaired guests, or spacious Gold Suites with a three-quarter-size double bed, an upper berth, and an en-suite bathroom.

Gold Premium

Take a step forward in luxury, amenities and design in Gold Premium rooms. Enjoy higher luggage allowances, satin sleep masks, sumptuous linens and premium toiletries in the en-suite bathrooms. Settle into a Gold Premium Twin cabin with plush lounge seating and a collapsible table by day, and upper and lower berths at night. Alternatively, select a Gold Premium Suite with a three-quarter-size double bed, a hidden upper berth, and a cosy lounge area with a table and chairs.

Platinum

Travel through the Land Down Under in unmatched elegance in The Ghan's Platinum cabins. Each is set up lounge-style by day, featuring banquet seating, ottomans and a movable table, and with either a double bed or two twins at night. Marvel at the changing route from windows on both sides of the cabin and enjoy attentive, personalised service. Complete with a full-sized en-suite bathroom, top-tier toiletries and complimentary nightcaps each evening, each detail is better than the last.

Upscale dining on The Ghan

Your Australian journey is a feast for your eyes and your taste buds while travelling on The Ghan. Each train ticket includes all meals and drinks throughout the journey, including breakfast and multi-course lunches and dinners. Each dish is chosen for the region through which the train travels and the ingredients grown there. cuisines from around the world. Enhance the meal further by pairing your selections with Australian wine and drinks, which are also included in the fare price.

Guests of Gold Class enjoy their meals amongst the exceptional service of the Queen Adelaide Restaurant. Gold Premium travellers are seated in the Art Deco-inspired lounge car for each meal, while Platinum riders are wined and dined in the newly added Platinum Club. Each class also has a dedicated lounge area where you can sit back and relax with a drink in hand and incredible views all around you.

The Ghan's route through Australia

While The Ghan's original course is still on offer, giving travellers two days and one night on the train, it is only one option to see Australia's beauty. Now, this train's route has been extended to travel from coast to coast, providing a scenic pathway between Darwin in the Northern Territory and Adelaide in South Australia.

Joining the train for its full journey across the great Red Centre from one coast to the other provides up to four days and three nights of on-board luxury, complete with meals and drinks, off-board excursions in unique locations, and an excellent standard of service while on board. Travellers can also choose to take shorter journeys on The Ghan, enjoying the same outstanding service while venturing between Darwin and Alice Springs or Alice Springs and Adelaide.
